Republic of Sudan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office of the Official Spokesperson and Media Department
Press Release
In response to the use of shelter materials (tarpaulins) provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) by the Janjaweed militia to cover their armored vehicles, The Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Sudan in Geneva has addressed the UNHCR headquarters, drawing attention to this grave violation of international humanitarian law and the United Nations Charter. The mission has requested an explanation for the incident and the actions the UNHCR will take in response to the militia’s exploitation of its name for military purposes.
International humanitarian law, the four Geneva Conventions, and the United Nations Charter prohibit the use of any UN-related materials or assets in armed conflicts.
Previously, elements of the militia used World Health Organization (WHO) uniforms during their military operations against civilians, prompting the Sudanese government to lodge a complaint and summon the program’s representative for clarification on the matter.
